As a longtime fan of Tolkien&#8217;s world, I hoped for a relaxing experience worthy of the Shire, but received a&nbsp;<strong>thoroughly average product<\/strong>&nbsp;deserving a&nbsp;<strong>4<\/strong><strong>\/10 rating<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Tales of the Shire Failed My Expectations<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The basic idea is brilliant<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; who wouldn&#8217;t want to relax in the Shire during the peaceful period when Bilbo has his adventure behind him and Frodo&#8217;s journey is still far off? Unfortunately,&nbsp;<strong>Weta Workshop<\/strong>&nbsp;executed this excellent premise in a way that feels&nbsp;<strong>unfinished and technically problematic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The biggest problems I identified:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Graphical stylization<\/strong>: The visual style is&nbsp;<strong>objectively unfortunate<\/strong>. The environments can occasionally look nice, but&nbsp;<strong>the hobbit models are downright repulsive<\/strong>. The comic-style conversion of original illustrations simply didn&#8217;t work and the result feels&nbsp;<strong>amateurish<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Catastrophic optimization<\/strong>: On\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/magicstark.cz\/en\/gaming-articles\/nintendo-switch-2-gets-new-system-update-for-july-2025\/\">Nintendo Switch<\/a><\/strong>, the game runs\u00a0<strong>absolutely terribly<\/strong>. Framerate drops with every visit to the Green Dragon, unstable performance, and\u00a0<strong>paradoxically worse performance in dock mode<\/strong>\u00a0than handheld. This is\u00a0<strong>unprofessional<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Superficial license usage<\/strong>: There should have been&nbsp;<strong>plenty of references<\/strong>&nbsp;to Tolkien&#8217;s world, but instead we get a&nbsp;<strong>generic cozy game<\/strong>&nbsp;with hobbits. Proper ingredient chopping and spice mixing creates&nbsp;<strong>pleasant flow<\/strong>, but this is unfortunately&nbsp;<strong>the only mechanic<\/strong>&nbsp;that stands above average cozy games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The basic game loop<\/strong>&nbsp;of gardening, fishing, gathering, and cooking&nbsp;<strong>technically functions<\/strong>, but&nbsp;<strong>brings nothing new<\/strong>. It&#8217;s a&nbsp;<strong>copy-paste<\/strong>&nbsp;from Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley without any&nbsp;<strong>unique identity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Seasonal changes<\/strong>&nbsp;and their effect on farming&nbsp;<strong>do what they&#8217;re supposed to<\/strong>, but&nbsp;<strong>lack depth<\/strong>. It&#8217;s not a system that would make you think strategically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Technical Shortcomings Are Inexcusable<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Switch version<\/strong>&nbsp;is a&nbsp;<strong>technical catastrophe<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Constant framerate drops<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Unstable performance<\/strong>\u00a0in all situations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Texture popping<\/strong>\u00a0just a few steps away<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Worse dock performance<\/strong>\u00a0than handheld<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/magicstark.cz\/en\/gaming-articles\/nintendo-switch-2-gets-new-system-update-for-july-2025\/\">Even Switch 2 won&#8217;t save<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0the fundamental problems. Performance helps, but\u00a0<strong>the game has no native version<\/strong>\u00a0for new hardware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Missing Basic Features<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>No Czech dubbing or translation<\/strong>&nbsp;for a brand the caliber of Lord of the Rings is&nbsp;<strong>incomprehensible<\/strong>.&nbsp;<strong>Unvoiced characters<\/strong>&nbsp;feel&nbsp;<strong>cheap<\/strong>&nbsp;and break immersion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Unfinished mechanics<\/strong>&nbsp;like choices in hobbit thoughts&nbsp;<strong>have no effect<\/strong>. The&nbsp;<strong>hopping button is completely useless<\/strong>. It feels like developers&nbsp;<strong>had good ideas<\/strong>&nbsp;but&nbsp;<strong>didn&#8217;t follow through<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Wasted Potential of Legendary Brand<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tales of the Shire<\/strong>&nbsp;could have been the&nbsp;<strong>perfect relaxing game<\/strong>&nbsp;for Tolkien fans. Instead, we get an&nbsp;<strong>unfinished product<\/strong>&nbsp;that&nbsp;<strong>abuses fan trust<\/strong>&nbsp;in the famous brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>15 hours of main story<\/strong>&nbsp;for&nbsp;<strong>$40<\/strong>&nbsp;would be fine if the game&nbsp;<strong>functioned technically<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>utilized the license<\/strong>&nbsp;worthily. Unfortunately, it accomplishes neither.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rating: 4\/10<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; A functioning foundation devalued by poor technical execution, unattractive graphics, and wasted potential of a unique brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Unattractive Rest in the Shire \ud83c\udfa8<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Graphical stylization<\/strong>&nbsp;represents one of the&nbsp;<strong>biggest problems<\/strong>&nbsp;of the entire game.
