Sea of Stars is a turn-based RPG set in the same universe as The Messenger (2018), developed by Sabotage Studio. Drawing strong inspiration from legendary Japanese classics such as Chrono Trigger, the game reimagines the golden era of 16-bit role-playing adventures while introducing modern design sensibilities. It tells the story of two Children of the Solstice, warriors who combine the powers of the sun and moon to perform Eclipse Magic — the only force capable of defeating the monstrous creations of the evil alchemist known as the Fleshmancer.
The game features a dynamic turn-based combat system that emphasizes timing, strategy, and player interaction. Attacks, spells, and defensive moves can be enhanced through well-timed button presses, while a unique “Locks” mechanic encourages players to disrupt powerful enemy abilities before they are unleashed. Battles flow seamlessly without random encounters or traditional grinding, creating a smooth and engaging experience that rewards tactical thinking rather than repetition.
Exploration plays an equally important role, blending classic top-down RPG traversal with platforming elements. Players can climb, swim, vault, and interact with the environment in ways that make the world feel alive and cohesive. Complemented by breathtaking pixel art, dynamic lighting effects, and a sweeping original soundtrack, Sea of Stars delivers both nostalgia and innovation — an ambitious and visually stunning homage to classic RPGs that stands confidently on its own.
