Nightreign is FromSoftware’s bold multiplayer experiment that combines Souls mechanics with rogue-lite elements and cooperation. While it hooks you for dozens of hours thanks to its addictive gameplay loop, flaws in the progression system and absence of basic online features prevent it from becoming a true hit.

Plusy
Addictive gameplay loop
Returning bosses aren’t just recycled
Stable online play
Limveld’s ever-changing environment
Mínusy
No support for cross-play or voice chat
Some bosses are extremely over-the-top

What is Elden Ring Nightreign?

Elden Ring Nightreign represents another chapter in FromSoftware’s universe, but this time in an alternative reality. Instead of the golden reign of goddess Marika, the Lands Between are ruled by dark Nightlords and the world is plunged into eternal darkness. You and up to two other players venture from Roundtable Hold on dangerous expeditions with the goal of defeating eight powerful bosses and restoring light.

Why did FromSoftware abandon their classic formula? Nightreign is primarily an experiment with multiplayer mechanics, combining familiar Souls elements with a time pressure system similar to battle royale games.

Game Mechanics and Difficulty ⚔️

Time Pressure and Strategic Decision Making

Unlike classic Elden Ring, in Nightreign you must survive exactly two days while preparing for the final boss fight. Each day has its own rhythm:

✓ Day – Exploration, resource gathering, character improvement
✓ Night – Mandatory boss fight
✓ Rain Barrier – Shrinking zone dealing damage

💡 Pro tip: You never know the exact time until nightfall. You must estimate whether you still have time to clear another camp or visit a church for extra flasks.

Dynamic Limveld

The map completely reorganizes with each playthrough. Camps, churches, loot, and enemies appear in different locations, ensuring no two runs are the same.

Location TypeFunctionStrategy
Small CampsRunes and basic lootQuick clearing for XP
ChurchesHealing flasksPriority for tanks
Ritual SitesWeapon upgradesValue depends on build

Shifting Earth Mechanic 🌍

After defeating certain bosses, Shifting Earth unlocks – a system that can completely transform a quarter of the map. These areas offer:

  • Higher Risk – Stronger enemies
  • Better Rewards – More runes and rarer loot
  • Special Benefits – Such as upgrading any weapon to legendary level

❌ A common mistake is underestimating the risk. If you die in these areas, teammates have only a short time to revive you, or you’ll lose an entire level.

Playable Characters and Team Composition 👥

Nightreign offers eight unique characters, each with their own abilities:

DPS Characters

  • Raider – Heavy hitter with a club, ideal for aggressive players
  • Executor – Melee specialist with Sekiro-like mechanics
  • Ironeye – Archer, accessible for beginners

Support Characters

  • Guardian – Tank specializing in defense
  • Recluse – Sorceress combining elements
  • [Other Characters] – Each with unique playstyle

Team Synergy

Success in Nightreign depends on balanced team composition. While Guardian tanks damage, Recluse provides supporting spells and DPS characters handle enemy elimination.

Progression System and Relics 📈

Problematic Progression System

Unlike classic rogue-lite games, Nightreign has a problematic progression system. The main way to improve is through relics, which you receive randomly after each attempt.

Relic Problems:
❌ Most relics are practically worthless
❌ Can’t combine weaker relics into stronger ones
❌ Even after dozens of hours, you get +1 bonuses
❌ No alternative progression system exists

✓ Useful Relics:

  • Increased rune gain
  • Healing teammates
  • Enhanced unique abilities

Bosses and Combat System ⚔️

Bosses and Combat System by MagicStark

Recycled but Enhanced

FromSoftware recycles bosses from their previous games, but each received new attacks and mechanics. You can look forward to:

  • Gaping Dragon with new area-of-effect attacks
  • Centipede Demon with improved mobility
  • Godskin Noble with modified moveset

Difficulty and Pace

Boss fights in Nightreign are significantly faster than in classic Souls games. Melee characters “barely manage to keep up” with boss speed.

Technical Aspects and Online Features 🌐

Positives

✓ Stable Online Play – No lag or disconnect issues
✓ Solid Optimization – Similar to classic Elden Ring
✓ Visual Quality – Beautiful scenery and aesthetics

Major Flaws

❌ No Cross-play – Can’t play with friends on other platforms
❌ Missing Voice Chat – Coordination only through ping system
❌ Limited Matchmaking – Affected by active mechanics

Solo vs. Cooperation 🎮

Why Cooperation Dominates

Solo mode is practically “just for show”. The game is designed for three-player teams and when playing alone:

  • Bosses have less health but fights drag on
  • No reviving exists – one death = restart
  • Some characters have practically no chance in solo

Remembrances and Character Stories

Solo mode makes sense primarily for completing Remembrances – quests developing individual character stories. These missions offer:

  • Interesting character backgrounds
  • Cosmetic rewards (clothing)
  • Ability to play in separate instances

Strategies and Tips for Success 🎯

Strategies and Tips for Success by MagicStark

For Beginners

Start with more accessible characters like Ironeye and focus on understanding the basic gameplay loop before experimenting with advanced builds.

For Advanced Players

Learn to optimize routes across the map and consider when it’s worth risking Shifting Earth areas for better loot.

For Team Players

Communication is key – even without voice chat, try to coordinate movement and priorities through ping system and text chat.

Final Verdict

Elden Ring Nightreign is a solid first attempt by FromSoftware at a multiplayer game. The gameplay loop works well and can hook you for long hours, but the underdeveloped progression system and absence of basic online features prevent it from becoming a true sensation.
