Rusted Gear: Why You Need It
Once you reach mid-game progression, Rusted Gear becomes a classic bottleneck—most commonly when you’re trying to upgrade your Gunsmith Bench to Level 3, which requires:

You can knock out Sentinel Core farming with a separate strategy, but Rusted Gear is often the harder piece because it’s a rare roll inside specific loot pools.
The Key Detail: Rusted Gears Share Spawns With Rusted Tools
Rusted Gears don’t usually have “unique” spawn points. Instead, they show up in the same places you’d normally find Rusted Tools they’re just the rarer outcome.
So the trick isn’t only where to look… it’s where to look to increase your odds.
Recommended Preparation (Loot-Run Setup)
This is a pure loot farm, so build your kit to secure rare finds and maximize container volume:

- Use Safe Pockets (custom loadout):
Rusted Gear is rare. Don’t lose it to a random Raider after finally finding one. - Bring a large backpack:
You’ll be looting tons of containers—bigger bag = more total value per run. - Use Interactive Maps:
Mark the Industrial Areas first. That’s your entire route.

Step 1: Farm on Higher-Difficulty Maps
Yes, Rusted Gears can appear on any map—but you’ll waste time farming low-difficulty zones.

On maps like Dam Battlegrounds, industrial loot almost always turns into Rusted Tools. To shift the odds, focus your runs on:
You’ll still see plenty of Rusted Tools… but your chance of hitting the rare Rusted Gear roll is much higher. It’s a numbers game—your goal is container volume.
Step 2: Best Places to Check (What to Loot)
Your priority targets are always:
✅ Vehicles
- Cars
- Buses
- Trucks

✅ Industrial Containers
- toolboxes
- lockers
- trunks
- searchable crates
- breach + search containers inside industrial buildings

The more “industrial” the area looks, the better.
Prime Farming Route: Spaceport (Most Consistent)
If you’re serious about grinding Rusted Gear, Spaceport is usually the best map because it has a high density of industrial structures.
Focus runs around these two hotspots:
1) Rocket Assembly Building
- Loot every container you see, especially red lockers
- Players report these lockers can roll Rusted Gears and also drop Epic (purple) weapon materials, making the run valuable even when you miss the gear roll.
2) Vehicle Maintenance Building
- High-value farming zone
- Search everything: containers, ground spawns, and surrounding vehicles
Secondary Option: Blue Gate (Safer Alternative)
If Spaceport is too contested or you’re getting bullied off your route, Blue Gate is a strong backup.

- Plenty of industrial compounds
- Lots of rusted-out vehicles to loot
- Check every toolbox, locker, and trunk
Notable spot (community-reported)
Some players have reported good results in an underground parking lot south of the Warehouse Complex, where multiple cars can spawn loot rolls that include Rusted Gears.
Extra community tip
Rusted Gears can sometimes show up in the back of buses so don’t ignore them while you’re clearing vehicle routes.
Step 3: Extract Immediately (Don’t Get Greedy)
Once you find a Rusted Gear (or two), treat it like a jackpot drop.
- Head to the nearest extraction point
- If it’s in your Safe Pocket, it stays yours even if you get eliminated before you extract
Back in Speranza, stash them immediately and you’re one step closer to that Gunsmith Bench Level 3 upgrade.
Good hunting, Raider.
