Caster minion

Caster minions are the fragile ranged minions that provide the bulk of a wave’s consistent damage from a safe distance. In every standard minion wave, three caster minions spawn. Compared to melee and siege minions, casters are much easier to kill, but their long attack range makes them important for wave pressure and last-hitting patterns.

Role in the minion wave

Caster minions sit behind the frontline and fire continuously while melee minions tank damage. Because they are frail, they usually die first once a wave collapses, but if they are protected they can help push faster and punish enemies who walk up too far.

Their high range also makes them relevant during early laning, where small position advantages can decide whether a wave pushes, freezes, or resets.

  • Attack speed: 0.667
  • Attack range: 550

Damage rules and scaling

Caster minions follow the general minion damage rule:

  • Minions deal 60% damage to structures and champions

Like other lane minions, caster minions upgrade every 90 seconds. Their upgrades increase health and attack damage until they hit a cap. This gradual scaling is one reason waves become more threatening and harder to clear instantly as the game progresses.

Special effects (Phreakish Gusto)

Caster minions have a built-in effect described by the cosmetic item Phreakish Gusto, which includes two unique combat rules:

Phreakish Gusto

Turret basic attacks are modified to deal 70% of the caster minion’s maximum health as pre-mitigation damage.

Minion Damager

Against lane minions, the caster minion deals bonus on-hit physical damage equal to 4% of the target’s current health.

These effects define how caster minions interact with turrets and help them remain meaningful in wave combat despite being the most fragile minion type.

ARAM differences

In ARAM, caster minions have a different bounty:

  • Gold bounty is 17 (+ 0.125 per 90 seconds)

Trivia highlights from your notes

  • The Phreakish Gusto effect is named after Phreak
  • In early development, caster minions had different names (Barracks Wizard, Wizard Minion)
  • In game files after later updates, caster minions are referred to as ranged minions

Quick takeaway

Caster minions are the wave’s fragile backline damage. Three spawn per wave, they scale through 90-second upgrades, and they have long range that shapes wave control. They are easy to clear but dangerous when left alive, especially when they stack up behind a healthy frontline.
